Can i use a second fully charged battery to boost start the dead battery in my van?

the battery is dead on my van, i can charge but was hoping to get out today. i have a second fully charged battery in my garage but cannot use it due to the dimensions - it physically won't fit in the cavity. can i use this charged battery to jump start my van and if so do i treat it the same as if i was jump starting from another motor? for example do i connect the negative cable or earth it?
