What should you rest your laptop on to keep it cool and have computer downloading without wasting energy?

What should i buy to put my computer on to keep it cool? Special laptop tray? Also i leave my computer to download files for hours when I am out, should I turn my screen off? How do I do that? What do i trun my computer to so it cn download files but not damage screen's life becasue it's staying on the whole time?
